 The Cincinnati Reds will continue to renovate several baseball fields in Louisville this year, after spending about $30,000 to upgrade fields at Shawnee Park last year.
As part of its Community Fund outreach project, the Reds will help build and recondition fields at Wyandotte Park. Metro Parks and the Reds will announce the upgrades in Louisville at 5 p.m. Thursday at Shawnee Park.
Metro Parks spokesman Jason Cissell said the scope of the Reds’ participation at Wyandotte will be hashed out in coming weeks, but the basic plan includes: Reconditioning infields and outfields. Seeding infields and outfields. Adding soil to optimize drainage. Fertilizing to promote healthy grass. Building more fields (up from three currently).
Cissell said the Reds also want to fund a new league or baseball training academy at Wyandotte Park.
“The cultural mix in this neighborhood is appealing,” he said, adding that the idea is still being fleshed out. The Reds don’t know how much money will be spend on Wyandotte, pending final plans.
Work continues at Shawnee. Last fall, four fields were sprayed for weeds, grass was re-seeded and dirt was reconditioned. Cissell said the fields will continue to be fertilized and drainage will be improved through the spring.
Community Fund spokesman John Cappella said the Reds’ outreach is about more than re-sodding fields and planting new bases.
“We want to build relationships,” Cappella said.
In addition to Louisville, last year the Reds Community Fund spent $340,000 renovating dozens of ball fields in Lexington, Newport, Covington, Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio and Dayton, Ohio.
